So by using virtual drums, you're saving yourself a lot of money for mics if nothing else. And that is very different from what you'd need for overheads (2 large diaphragm condensers like the Rode NT2-A).

You have to have a bunch of additional microphones.ДЇor example, the kick drum needs a certain kind of mic (like an AKG D 112, for example) that is very different from the snare drum (typically a Shure SM57 or two).

You need somewhere to put it and a drummer good enough to be on your recording. In order to record live drums, not only do you have to have a drum kit. Plus, even though it's a lot of fun to play drums, recording them is typically not easy. One of the down-sides to all this is that it's actually fun to play drums for real! But finding a place for the kit to live is hard if you don't have a lot of space in your house.

This is also a plus if you live in an apartment and drums would generate neighbor complaints. And perhaps the biggest benefit for my wife - I don't have to make all the racket in the house that a drum kit would create.

On the other hand, if you wish to record lengthy drum solos, you can do that better and faster using electronic drums, and it would be too much of a hassle using software.If you only want repetitive loops (with some variety of course), a virtual instrument can get the job done.

However, for your studio, electronic drums may be overkill. In that sense, you can get more realistic patterns using electronic drums, compared to virtual instrument software. They would be easier to use and you can play the most difficult nuances with easy (if yoвЂ™re skilled). If youвЂ™re a drummer, you can definitely extract the best from an electronic drum kit, as opposed to using a software. In that case, you have a couple of substitutes for recording drums:ДЄnd the next obvious question is вЂњWhich one is better?вЂќ Here are the pros and cons of each. In that case, you can even have an acoustic piano in your studio.Д«ut then, its not practical for most setups to have these instruments. If space and/or budget is not a constraint, you can definitely have it. Even if you would love to have it, for many its just not possible. In most scenarios, using acoustic drums in your recording studio is just not practical.
